Somerset County resident accused of stalking woman

Sandra K. Reabuck

SOMERSET — A Somerset County man who faced homicide charges earlier this year in the slaying of his wife of three weeks now is charged with stalking and harassing another woman.

Homicide and related charges against 75-year-old William A. McTonic were withdrawn in February by District Attorney Jerry Spangler after a judge threw out incriminating statements McTonic allegedly had made to the Conemaugh Township police.

Spangler said there was not sufficient evidence for prosecutors to take the homicide case to trial.

The April 2009 shooting death of 73-year-old Ruth Anne Henderson-McTonic remains an open case.

In the latest incident, McTonic is charged by state police with repeatedly stalking a Somerset Township woman between July 30 and Tuesday. Misdemeanor charges of stalking and harassment and a summary harassment charge were filed before District Judge Arthur Cook.

On Saturday, state police reported that McTonic had turned himself at the state police barracks without incident. He was arraigned before on-call District Judge Douglas Bell and released after a nonmonetary bail was set. The magistrate ordered McTonic to have no contact with the woman. A preliminary hearing is set for Aug. 17 before Cook.

McTonic reportedly sent the woman flowers and repeatedly called her on the phone and drove past her house. He allegedly told the woman’s family members that he was going to marry her.

McTonic also faces an Aug. 31 hearing before Cook on summary charges of harassing the same woman, according to published reports.

Hearing postponed for stalking suspect
The Tribune-Democrat

SOMERSET — A preliminary hearing for former murder defendant William McTonic, 75, on stalking charges was continued Tuesday.

Clerks in the office of District Judge Arthur Cook said a new date has not been scheduled.

Police said McTonic hassled a Somerset Township woman in late July and early August. He faces misdemeanor charges of harassment and stalking and a summary harassment count.

McTonic is alleged to have driven by the woman’s house, sent her flowers and continually called her on the phone. Cook released him on his own recognizance and ordered him not to contact the woman.

District Attorney Jerry Spangler in February withdrew homicide charges against McTonic in the April 2009 shooting death of his new wife Ruth Anne Henderson-McTonic, 73.

Conemaugh Township police apparently violated McTonic’s rights while questioning him about the homicide, rendering that evidence useless.

The murder case remains open.

Jerome man, 76, accused of stalking woman

A 76-year-old Somerset County man once accused of murdering his second wife faces trial next month for allegedly stalking an elderly woman who testified against him.

But William A. McTonic, of Jerome, claims the woman has been bothering him.

County prosecutors dropped the murder case last year after a judge threw out a statement McTonic allegedly made to Conemaugh Township police investigating the April 2009 death of Ruth Anne Henderson-McTonic, 73. The case remains under investigation.

In the summer of 2010, McTonic allegedly sent flowers to the alleged stalking victim, drove by her Somerset Township home and repeatedly called her.

He's charged with stalking and harassment.

"I'm innocent," McTonic told the Associated Press this week. "I can prove that lady called me 90 times in one month. So who's harassing who?"

McTonic said he's being targeted by prosecutors who charged him with murdering his second wife after three weeks of marriage, the AP reported.

McTonic declined an interview with the Tribune-Review onThursday. "I'm not talking about any of this," he said.

His attorney, Joseph Policicchio, wasn't available for comment yesterday.

Somerset County District Attorney Jerry Spangler said McTonic's stalking case is scheduled for the Oct. 11 trial term. He declined to comment about McTonic's case, saying he didn't want to prejudice prospective jurors.

"The matter is currently before the court, and we'll let the facts be developed in that forum," Spangler said. "When allegations of serious conduct are made, they're investigated by the appropriate police agency, and a determination is made to file charges, as in any other case in Somerset County."

Relatives found Henderson-McTonic's body on the back porch of her home, where she lived apart from her new husband. She had been shot twice in the chest with a .22-caliber firearm.

Henderson-McTonic's daughter told police her mother wanted to end the relationship, leading McTonic to threaten his wife and her family and threaten suicide.
